How Much Does the Council Charge to Collect a Sofa?

Having your council collect one sofa costs nothing at all to £90.90 depending entirely on where you live, with a median of £36. There is no national price, and most people find that out only after they have already looked up a skip. We read the published charge for 299 UK councils on their own websites — the full table is below, and every figure links to the page it came from.

Why one number does not exist

Bulky waste collection is a discretionary service. Each council sets its own price and its own rules, and they do not even price it the same way. Across the councils we checked there are four different models in use:

• A bundle — one price for up to a set number of items, typically three to six. 139 councils.
• A flat fee — one price whatever you put out, so a single armchair costs the same as a van-load. 71 councils.
• Per item — cheap for one thing, and it adds up fast. 47 councils.
• By category — separate prices for upholstered furniture, electricals and general items, because upholstered seating now has to be handled separately from other waste. 35 councils.

That is why the table below answers the same two questions for every council rather than quoting each one's own price list: what one sofa costs, and what a typical three-item collection costs. Their own structure is in the notes.

What each council charges

Charges were read from each council's own website and independently re-checked against the live page. Where a council is not listed, either it publishes no charge or we could not confirm a current figure and would rather show nothing than guess.

The cheapest and the most expensive

The median hides how wide the split is. Of the 299 councils we could confirm, 7 collect a sofa for nothing and 128 charge £40 or more, with 24 under £20 and 140 between £20 and £40. Two households either side of a boundary can pay £90.90 and nothing for exactly the same job.

Collect free of charge: Belfast, Fife, Hyndburn, Liverpool, Enfield, Pendle, Sunderland. Free services are usually capped at a set number of collections a year.

Cheapest: City of Edinburgh (£5), East Lothian (£5), Glasgow (£5), Lewisham (£5), Blaenau Gwent County (£7.10).

Most expensive: Argyll and Bute (£90.90), Spelthorne (£90), Richmond upon Thames (£85), Orkney Islands (£79.50), Colchester (£77). The same sofa, off the same sort of street, priced 18x apart depending on the council.

Check your free allowance before you pay for anything. 19 of the councils in the table give every household a set number of free collections a year and only charge once those are used. The price in the table is what you pay after the allowance, so if you have not had a collection this year yours may well cost nothing.

Discounts worth asking about. 87 of the councils in the table cut or waive the charge for households on a low income or certain benefits, and it is rarely advertised on the booking page. If you receive Council Tax Support, Housing Benefit or Universal Credit, check before you pay.

Run no collection service at all: Newcastle-under-Lyme, Runnymede. In those areas a licensed waste carrier is the only option.

Paused when we last checked: Cheshire East. A suspension is not the same as scrapping the service and these usually restart within weeks, so check the council's own page before assuming you have to pay a private firm.

When a skip or a van works out cheaper

The council is almost always the cheapest way to shift one or two items, and almost never the right answer for a house clearance. Three things decide it:

• How many items. Below a flat-fee council's threshold you are paying full price for one chair. Above six or seven items, a skip at £180 to £400 usually beats a per-item charge.
• How soon. Council collections are commonly booked two to four weeks out and you cannot usually pick the day. A man and van will normally come within a few days.
• Who lifts it. Most councils require you to put everything outside on the boundary before they arrive. If the sofa is upstairs and you cannot move it, that rules the council out whatever the price.

One thing worth knowing whichever route you take: it is your legal duty to check that anyone you pay to take waste away is a registered waste carrier. If they fly-tip it and it is traced back to you, the fine is yours, not theirs. The register is free to search on the Environment Agency, SEPA, Natural Resources Wales or NIEA site depending on where you live.
